Curriculum RG Frankfurt

Contact Person

The mentor team of the RG Frankfurt is at your side for all questions regarding your training. The team is headed by the lead mentor, who also organizes the training operation. If you have any training-related questions, you can always contact him (of course any other mentor as well).

The RG leadership has nothing to do directly with the controller training, but can of course help you with it and answer questions that arise, or forward them to the leading mentor.

S1 Basic Lesson

Welcome to the S1 training in the RG Frankfurt. To make your start easier, you will find our training plan (Curriculum) on the following pages.

To start as a controller and achieve your S1-Rating you are required to participate in a S1 Basic Lesson. These lessons are held about once a month and will be announced in a separate thread in the "Flugsicherungsakademie Langen" Forum. The number of participants is limited to 15 persons and will be assigned on a "first come, first serve" basis. So keep an eye out for the thread in the forum.

Please refrain from posting training requests in other threads.

Before the lesson, you should set up your Euroscope and Audio for Vatsim accordingly. The setup instructions can be found below under "Requirements".

If you have any questions, feel free to contact any mentor.

We wish you a lot of fun with your training.

Exam Retake

If you have failed an ATD Exam in the Moodle course, please contact the Lead Mentor. He will unlock you for a second attempt after you have studied again. If you do not pass the second attempt, you will have to attend the next lesson and your progress will be deleted. Remember that the tests are open-book, you are allowed and asked to look in the provided documents and use search engines while doing the test.

If you want to continue your training, please apply for an online training at EDDS after a minimum of 10 hours in our forum
"[ANGEBOTE/REQUESTS] Training Request Thread"

The S1 Minor endorsement can be revoked at any time by the lead mentor or the RG leadership.

S2 Training (TWR)

General

The training in the RG Frankfurt starts at Stuttgart/EDDS airport. There you will collect the first training steps together with a mentor. After about two months, you will move to our major airport Frankfurt/EDDF, where you will gain further experience at a more complex airport and prepare for the Controller Practical Test (CPT), which will complete your tower training.

The training takes place under the student's own responsibility. This means that you have to apply for the next training steps on your own and on time. Throughout your training, you will be guided by a moodle course, where you can check your current progress. It is important that you request your "CPT preparation training" in time before the end of your solo phase. Otherwise, the solo phase will be automatically terminated. It is also highly recommended to plan your CPT to take place at least one month before the end of your Solophase and to plan your preparation accordingly.

For each training, you have to prepare yourself according to the Moodle Course. It is important that you not only read the documents but also understand and learn the content. If a training reveals that you do not meet the requirements, the training can immediately be canceled.

Every training will take place on our Teamspeak server in the channel "Training Briefing/Debriefing" of the RG Frankfurt.

We expect you to use your training efficiently because it requires a lot of mentoring hours. This means that we expect you to control at least two hours per week. If this is not the case and you do not log any sessions during a month, we reserve the right to withdraw your solo phase without warning. Exceptions may be made in agreement with the lead mentor.

You can find the Moodle Course here: EDFF Curriculum S1/S2

EDDS Online Training

Requirements
Contents

Together with a mentor, you will occupy the position EDDS_TWR and under his guidance, you will control the entire airport.

After you successfully complete your tower training, you are allowed to control all stations up to Tower (S1 solo phase) at the training airport Stuttgart/EDDS and will now be able to control on your own. If you have any questions, you can (and should) contact one of the mentors at any time.

Within 40 days you should gain experience and at least 25 hours on the position you have been assigned (please also in the evening, especially on the online day in Stuttgart, i.e. Sunday evening). Please apply for introductory training in Frankfurt/EDDF 40 days after the start of the solo phase at the latest.

No later than 60 days after receiving your solo phase, you should have learned the procedures in Stuttgart/EDDS to the extent that you can move to Frankfurt/EDDF to continue your training. You can deviate from this standard on the recommendation of your mentor or due to your express wish to continue your training in Stuttgart/EDDS.

The S1 Solophase is valid for 60 days. Then a decision must be made about where you will continue your training. Otherwise, the Solophase expires! If the release expires after 60 days without you having been active for further training (e.g. requesting another training), the Solophase will simply be removed.

While your Solophase is in Stuttgart/EDDS, you may only control in Stuttgart/EDDS, not on the other minor airports.

It is strongly recommended that VFR can be controlled correctly and confidently before moving to Frankfurt since trainees in Frankfurt have little contact with VFR. A further indication of whether one is ready for the change to Frankfurt is the ability to know all common IFR phraseologies (especially IFR Clearance) fluently, accurately, and by heart.

EDDF Introduction

Requirements
Contents

The introductory session will be held in two parts. The first training is a simulation with 07-ops and the second one with 25-ops.

After successful instruction, you will continue your tower training in Frankfurt/EDDF. For the remaining time of your S1 Solophase (120 days in standard case), you will control independently in Frankfurt/EDDF and prepare for your CPT, which you will also take there.

Please apply for an over-the-shoulder training after 2 to 3 weeks. You should have controlled at least 10 hours by then.

While the Solophase is in Frankfurt/EDDF, you may only control in Frankfurt/EDDF, not in Stuttgart/EDDS.

OTS Training

Requirements
Contents

Together with a mentor, you control EDDF_S_TWR (and all stations below) in the evening. The mentor checks if you are applying all procedures correctly and how you handle yourself online.

Latest 50 days before the end of your solo phase, you should request your CPT preparation training in the forum.

CPT Preparation Training

Requirements
Contents

Usually, two CPT preparation trainings are conducted in the simulator. Take the opportunity to listen to other trainings!

If the mentor is satisfied with your performance and your theoretical knowledge, he will give you the "go" for your final training.

Please make sure that you have controlled at least 40 hours at your exam airport.

Final Training

Requirements
Contents

You will occupy the examination station under the supervision of a mentor. GND and DEL are blocked, so this training shows if you are ready for the CPT.

DEL and GND should always be occupied on Fridays except on CPTs, so unfortunately the final training on TWR cannot take place on Fridays.

The mentor might notice a few things that you could do better that didn't show up in the simulator.

If the mentor is satisfied with your performance, he will give you the "Go" for the CPT. He then makes an appointment with you and applies for your CPT. With your CPT application, the ATSimTest will be activated.

ATSimTest S2

Requirements

The ATSimTest must be completed and passed before starting the CPT. Otherwise, the exam cannot take place!

CPT

Requirements
Contents

In the CPT you show two examiners (ATD examiner and local assessor) that you have mastered all ground positions. All contents of the tower training are relevant for the exam.

Tip: control safely and exactly the way you learned it. Don't try to control the traffic overly cautiously, nor do try to get out to all limits and beyond - the examiners only want to see that you can handle the traffic volume well and as confidently as possible. A perfect CPT is therefore very boring for the examiners to watch. If you should have a major mishap or it's just not your day at all, don't be too disappointed about a failed CPT - of course, you have (mostly after a new CPT preparation training) another try.

After passing CPT, you will apply for the S2 rating. With the rating upgrade to S2, you get the clearance to occupy all minor airports in Germany and to be assigned to major airports.

S3 Training (APP)

General

The training on Approach takes place either in EDDS/Stuttgart or EDDF/Frankfurt. The final decision on this is made by the mentor responsible for the Approach Lesson.

The solo phase for approach lasts a maximum of only 3 months. Since this period is very short, it is important to use the solo phase efficiently. If you know that you will not be able to use part of the solo phase for personal reasons, please inform the responsible mentor during the Approach Lesson, so that we can plan the solo start accordingly.

Together with a mentor, you will occupy the position EDDF_N_APP and control under his guidance.

If you have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to deal with the usual larger traffic volumes and "VFR specials", you will receive the S2 solo phase. Otherwise further sessions in the simulator will follow until you are ready.

The solo phase runs for only 30 days! Towards the end of these 30 days, you should have gained enough experience (also with larger traffic volumes) to request a CPT preparation training. The Solophase can be extended a maximum of two times for further 30 days. This period cannot be extended even after a failed CPT.

Take care that your Solophase will be extended in time and that your first CPT attempt will be in the first extension! If you have not earned an S3 rating by the end of the second extension, you will, unfortunately, have to cancel the training on Approach and take a 30-day break. Without Solophase you have no right to control Approach with an S2-Rating.

C1 Training (CTR)

General

The training as center controller takes place on either the Gießen (GIN), Paderborn High (PADH), or Dinkelsbühl (DKB) sector. Compared to the training on Tower and Approach, there is relatively little theory content.

If you decide to train in the Paderborn High sector, the mentors of the RG Düsseldorf are responsible for your training. The following guide describes your training steps in the RG Frankfurt.

All training on Center takes place online, which is why the station must be booked for each training with Training=yes. You should find a controller who can occupy EDDF_N_APP for you.

The solo phase for center lasts a maximum of only 3 months. Since this period is very short, it is important to use the solo phase efficiently. If you know that you will not be able to use part of the solo phase for personal reasons, please inform the responsible mentor before your first training, so that we can plan the solo start accordingly.

About 30 minutes before the start of the booking time, you will meet with your mentor and discuss the main differences between Approach and Center. You will also briefly discuss the graphical LoA.

Together with your mentor you will occupy the center sector and control independently under his guidance.

If you have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills you will receive the S3 solo phase. Otherwise, further online trainings will follow until you are ready.

ATSimTest C1

Requirements

Please also note that the ATSimTest C1 is much more comprehensive and demanding than the ATSimTests completed so far. If you have any questions, please contact a senior mentor or the lead mentor of the RG Frankfurt. They will be happy to help you and can discuss the tasks set there with you. For questions about aircraft performance you HAVE TO look HERE. Aircraft performance deviating from this list are not considered correct for the purpose of the ATSimtest. The ATSimTest should be completed at least 5 days prior to your CPT.

End of training

Congratulations! You have completed the entire controller training as a vController in the RG Frankfurt

and you are allowed to control Langen Radar and all other stations for which you have endorsements, as long as you don't become inactive in between (then you cannot lose your rating, but you can lose your station clearances). Possibly lost endorsements due to inactivity can usually be recovered by training on that station. In these cases please contact the respective mentor in charge.

What happens now? Well, the C1-Rating entitles you to control all stations VATSIM-wide after appropriate introduction. In addition, you can still strive for the C3 rating. However, the C3 rating does not lead to any further approvals or authorizations and very few mentors and VATSIM officials have this rating.

Now that you have completed the entire training in the RG Frankfurt, think about whether you can find a field at VATSIM Germany and/or in the RG Frankfurt where you can get involved in the community. The cooperation with NAV, Events, Tech, the PTD and the ATD (just to name a few examples) is very welcome - although especially Tech, the ATD, and the PTD like to address suitable candidates themselves. However, asking will certainly not hurt.

All that remains is for us to wish you a lot of fun and a good time controlling, flying, and chatting in the VATSIM-Community!

Training restart

Since controllers often drop out of training and come back a short time later to rejoin, we see ourselves forced, also under the aspect of fairness to all those who are on the waiting list, to make the restart via a new training request.

If you have dropped out of the training due to your own fault, you have to apply for a new endorsement Sim at the last airport you controlled (S2) or an Approach Lesson (S3) and then wait for your turn.

We make exceptions here if the solo clearance expires after repeated failure to pass the CPT. In this case, you can start again (after two weeks) with your training.
