Ground
Nürnberg Ground is responsible for IFR and start-up clearance as well as all taxiing traffic at the airport.

Departures on SIDs are generally released in Nürnberg, i.e. route clearance can be given without further request. Departures via vectors must be coordinated with the APP controller.
Squawk 1000 must not be assigned in Nürnberg due to the lack of mode S recievers in the vicinity of the airport. Instead a individual transponder code shall be given using the „Get SSR“ function of the squawk generator.
Datalink Clearance (PDC/DCL)
Datalink clearances are offered in Nürnberg. The station code is EDDN.
Helicopter Traffic
The helipads are within the area of responsibility of Nürnberg Ground. Helicopters are to be handled like normal fixed-wing aircraft, except clearances should say "air-taxi" instead of "taxi".
Helicopter movements are permitted on all apron areas and established taxiways.
Local rescue helicopters may use taxiway F for take-off and landing in operating direction 10 and 28. It can be used for helicopters with a rotor blade of up to 20 m in both directions (usable length 1000 m). Access to TWY F from Pads 1–3 is available via the "hoverway". Nürnberg Ground instructs air-taxi to TWY F via the hoverway and hands traffic off without delay to Nürnberg Tower.
Nürnberg has four helipads of which two have fixed assignments to locally based rescue helicopters.
Visiting helicopters often also park on normal aircraft positions including aprons U1 and U2 depending on the duration of the stay.
Helipad details
| Helipads | Size | Remarks |
| H1 | 16.7 x 16.7 m | Reserved for CHX88 (Christoph 88, DRF) |
| H2 | 14.5 x 14.5 m | - |
| H3 | 16.7 x 16.7 m | Reserved for CHX27 (Christoph 27, DRF) |
| H4 | 16.7 x 16.7 m | - |
Caution: The latest AIP charts show the numbering of H1-H3 in the opposite direction than all other sources/sceneries/aerial imagery. The information here refers to the sim data which has H1 as the most easterly helipad which is also the numbering the controllers will use.
Limited taxiways
- Taxiways M1, M2, M3, M4, N2 and N4 are available for aircraft up to ICAO Code Letter C (wingspan under 36 metres, e.g. B737/A320),

- Taxiway N4 is to be used exclusively for incoming traffic for parking positions 40 - 44
AircraftOnly aircraft up to ICAO Code Letter B (wingspan less than 24 metres) can taxi on all taxiways in the general aviation apron areas (S3, S4 and T2)- Incoming traffic taxiing on taxiway C CANNOT be sent to the right onto taxiway F
Parking positions
The parking position is normally assigned by the GroundRadarPlugin.
Some parking positions can be used in two directions (4x and 8x); for those the direction of the parking is indicated with a little arrow facing north or south in the lists and tags; see below to apply the correct paths and procedures.
Positionsand cargo up to wingspan 36 m (ICAO type code letter B, C, e.g. up to A32x, B73x):-
General aviation and aircraft up to wingspan 24 m (ICAO type code letter A and B):
The general aviation aprons are accessed via the Entry GAT where in reality a follow me will pick up the aircraft and lead it to an unmarked stand. Most smaller bizjets park at Apron G2 and G2A, smaller GA aircraft park on aprons U1 and U2.
The aprons and hangars of Aerodienst and FAI who both have their homebase and maintenance facilities at Nürnberg are also in this area. For GA aircraft up to MPW of 2000 kg the grass parking area G3 is available. Airliner
Most parking positions at the airport are limited to a wingspan of 36 m and are used mainly depending on the duration of the parking as well as whether a jetway is wanted. Short turnarounds tend to use the terminal positons 9-16 or the remote stands 30-35 and 4-6, while overnight parking is done on positions 40-44 or 30-35. Cargo aircraft use stands 1-6 and 26-28 with the latter often kept in reserve to allow parking of larger type aircraft. Stand 1 is mostly used by turboprop cargo due to its reduced length.
Sequence of use of positions 30-35 and 40-44 is very important as taxi behind parked aircraft via N2 or N4 is usually not possible.
Stand details (type code letter C)
| Stands | Usage |
| 01 - 06 | Cargo, airlines |
| 10 - 13 | Airlines; jetway positions |
| 09, 13 - 16 | Airlines; non-jetway positions |
| 26 - 28 | Cargo, mil. transport; facing north, taxi-out |
| 30 - 35 | Airlines; facing south, taxi-out, access via N2, blocks N2 |
| 40 - 44 | Airlines (overnight parking), military; facing south, taxi-out, access via N4, can block N4 |
| 82, 84, 86 | Large biz jets, small airlines, wingspan 24-29 m; facing south, pushback, access/exit via M4 only |
Airliner and cargo aircraft with wingspan higher than 36 m (ICAO type code letter D, E, F):
Nürnberg only is certified for type code C aircraft, so anything larger has to be operated under special conditions which is called "Higher Code Letter Aircraft" (HCLA) procedure (according ADR.OPS.B.090) and allows also code letter D, E and even some F (B748 and C5).
Pilots are asked to refrain from operating any aircraft with wingspan >65 m (e.g. A388, AN225) at Nürnberg without prior coordination as those will only disrupt operations and cannot be dealt with in a senseful manner - we can't remove the mobile lightmasts nor clear large parts of the main apron just to enable the operation of a single over-sized aircraft.
Positions available for type code D (36-43/52 m) and E (52-65 m) aircraft can easily be identified by the suffixes D and E. Officially these aircraft need taxi guidance by follow me which is not simulated on VATSIM. Taxiway N4 will be blocked by parked aircraft on stands 40-44, so always use the farthest available position to the west first. Find more details for handling of HCLA in the forum.
